2004
GUSTAFSON/BIRDS AS ART TANZANIA PHOTO SAFARI
Todd and I were so thrilled with our 2003 Tanzania
experience (Todd was born there to missionary parents) that we will be
returning to Tanzania next year just a bit later. We are leaving on 1-27-04
and arriving in Arusha on the evening of 1-28. We will then have 14 full
and one half-day of photography with game drives every morning
and afternoon; there will be no wasted travel days. Though there are no
guarantees, the dates overlap the typical wildebeest birthing dates, and
there will be dozens of other wildlife subjects including elephants, zebras,
giraffes, antelopes, predators, and a good variety of birds. We will
photograph at Arusha National Park on the morning of the first day, continue
on to Tarangire National Park for two nights (tented camp), and then spend
two nights (most likely at Serena Lodge) at Lake Manyara National Park
before heading to Ndutu for 5 nights (in a wonderful bush camp)
and following that up with 5 nights at Ngorongoro Crater at the sumptuous
Sopa Crater Lodge.
Do note that though this is a Photo Safari, not an
Instructional Photo Tour, I will be sharing images with the group at most
meals and will be glad to share my thoughts and to answer all of your
questions as well. Todd will have a few of his photo albums and will be
glad to do the same. As we hope to have ten others join us, there will not
be a leader in each van every day so experienced photographers will get the
most out of this Photo Safari. The cost of this Photo Safari will almost
surely be between $6500 and $7000 plus your airfare to and from Tanzania.
The fees include all lodges, ground transportation, park fees, and meals.
Please send a $500 refundable deposit to hold your spot. Once the cost is
determined, you will be notified and your deposit will become
non-refundable. As final payments will be required well in advance of the
trip, you may wish to take out travel insurance in case of any health or
family emergencies.
Itinerary for the 2004
GUSTAFSON/BIRDS AS ART TANZANIA PHOTO SAFARI.
Included:
Transport by 7-seater vehicle:
adapted Land Rover Defenders with large roof hatches. Three photographers per
vehicle. We will travel with a maximum of 6 vans. While on safari, each van
will operate independently of the others. The photographic opportunites that
we encountered in 2003 were so numerous that we can assure you that there will
be ample and varied subjects for all vans and for all participants. Surely
some days will be better than others, and surely one van might get really
lucky once in a while, but after 14 1/2 days, things will even out quite
nicely. Crybabies and whiners are invited to stay home.
Do note that though this is a
Photo Safari, not an Instructional Photo Tour, I will be sharing images with
the group at most meals and will be glad to share my thoughts and to answer
all of your questions as well. Todd will have a few of his photo albums and
will be glad to do the same. As we hope to have sixteen others join us, there
will not be a leader in each van every day so experienced photographers will
0f course get the most out of this Photo Safari.

The lodges we stay in are beautiful in all ways -Good food comfortable rooms
and friendly staff. They are all located in unique and beautiful settings and
there is a distinctive peaceful and safe feeling about each one of them.
The first place we will be is the Momella Game lodge on the slopes of Mt. Meru.
There is a bird sanctuary on the grounds and some people may enjoy early AM
shooting on the first day.
Next is The Tented Camp at Tarangire National Park. It is a permanent Camp
with comfortable beds, in-tent bathrooms, a beautiful dining area GREAT
showers and it is situated on a bluff above the Tarangire River. Elephants
come to the river every day to drink and bathe. What a show!
The Serena Hotel at Lake Manyara is on the escarpment overlooking the Lake.
The setting is to die for and there are birds all over the grounds. A great
staff is always looking for ways to make you more comfortable.
From there we go to the Ndutu Lodge situated in the bush. This is my favorite
lodge. You are in a comfortable, rustic lodge where some of the staff has
worked for 30 years. Sitting by the fire after a safari drive can be an
experience! Elephants walk by. Lions roar in the bush and Giraffe come in to
drink at the watering hole.
The Sopa lodge at Ngorongoro Crater is the most sumptuous experience of the
trip. At 9000 ft. it overlooks the crater and is situated on the Eastern rim
for spectacular sun sets. Each room is a suite with tons of room and modern
facilities.
