This image was created at Nickerson Beach, Long Island NY on the recently concluded Nickerson Beach Baby Beach Nesting Birds IPT with the tripod-mounted Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens, the Canon 2x EF Extender III (Teleconverter), and the Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera. Nickerson Baby Beach Nesting Birds IPT Report
Wow! What a great group. Denise Ippolito and I were joined by 13 photographers and one non-photographer dad at Nickerson Beach, Long Island, NY. All 13 were happy campers. Amazingly, 11 of the 13 photographers were repeat BAA clients (recidivists as I like to call them. :)) All but 2 I believe, were multiple IPT veterans. Dear friends of both of ours, Alan and Pat Lillich have been on a zillion IPTs. The rascally yet lovable John Van de Graaff has been on 3 Galapagos trips with me and is threatening to make it 4 in July 2015. Mark Hardymon is a sweet a man as you could ever wish to meet as is Mike Goldhamer who has also been on a zillion IPTs. Harry Hersh who traveled from Canada, Toronto I think, appears gruff on the outside and is quiet at times but is as nice as can be on the inside. Brent Bridges is tall, soft spoken, quiet, and eager to learn; denise is his favorite photo instructor. Geri George from Colorado is one of our very best friends and favorite clients. We wind up seeing her on some Florida event or another almost every year. Her first IPT was Bosque John Haedo is another lovable rascal. He is quite good at Photoshop and shares his knowledge with others freely and often. Doug West had been to Bosque with me about six years ago but has been a good online friend over the years. Tim Thompson, a knowledgeable and tremendously enthusiastic birder and photographer was back for his second consecutive Nickerson Beach IPT.

This is the original for the opening image above. It was frustrating to just clip the tail. I needed to rebuild the wing and tail tips from scratch, and in addition, needed to level the image and add canvas. I used about 25 small Quick Masks and the Clone Stamp Tool to rebuild the wing and tail tips after failing miserably on my first attempt. That one took an hour. Everything above is covered in detail in Digital Basics File, an instructional PDF that is sent via e-mail. It also includes my complete digital workflow, dozens of additional great Photoshop tips including Digital Eye Doctor techniques, several different ways of expanding canvas, all of my time-saving Keyboard Shortcuts, Quick Masking, Layer Masking and NIK Color Efex Pro basics, creating and using time-saving Actions, and tons more. See also our killer MP-4 Tutorial Photoshop Videos here. |
It as great meeting and working with with Larry Tawa from California. He confided that he arrived not sure that he would learn much because the BAA Blog is heavily Canon-centric. That myth, however, was dispelled in five minutes flat when I explained to him how to properly expose to the right on his private morning In-the-Field workshop the morning before the IPT began. He was a willing, eager, attentive, and very polite student. He learned so much that I teased him daily by telling him that Jennifer would be sending him a bill to cover his surcharge! Denise who knows far more about Nikon than I do, was able to help both Larry and Tim with their Nikon camera setup and with their AF settings. And Larry kindly allowed me to work with the new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens and his Nikon D3S. At some point I will do a blog post on that experience.

This image of Paul Pinto Jr. at work was created at Nickerson Beach, Long Island NY on the recently concluded Nickerson Baby Beach Nesting Birds IPT with the tripod-mounted Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens, the Canon 1.4x EF Extender III (Teleconverter), and the Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 1/3 stops: 1/500 sec. at f/6.3 in Manual Mode. You can see that Paul Jr. is serious about his photography. All he needs is a Mongoose M3.6…. One sensor below and three to the left of the Central sensor/AI Servo/Surround Rear Focus AF just in front of Paul Jr.’s ear active at the moment of exposure. Click here if you missed the Rear Focus Tutorial. Click on the image to see a larger version. Your browser does not support iFrame. |
Last but not least, it was an incredible treat meeting and working with Paul Pinto Jr who was accompanied by his Dad, Paul Sr. On day 2, I had thought that Paul Jr. was about 16 or 17. He was so mature. And though that was his first time using a long lens–he rented a 500 II from BAA–he handled his gear like a 20-year veteran. And he asked questions, listened, and soaked up the information as I did 30 years ago. I ran into someone last week who knew me back then. His comment:” God, he never shut up. Artie would ask questions until you begged for mercy.” I always made it a point to try and learn as much as possible from folks that were smarter and more experienced than I. And I continue to do that to this day. Oh, and BTW, Paul Jr made the image of the trip when he captured an image of a Great Black-backed Gull as it captured a fledgling Common Tern; the tern was biting the gull on the neck as he snapped the shutter. I will be sharing this image and others of Paul Jr.’s in an upcoming blog post on this fine young man.

This image of a Common Tern with a single chick at the nest was created with tripod-mounted Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM lens with Internal 1.4x Extender (with the internal TC in place at 560mm) and the Canon EOS-1D X. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/320 sec. at f/5.6. One sensor below the central sensor/AI Servo-Surround/Rear Focus AF on the bird’s neck active at the moment of exposure. Click here if you missed the Rear Focus Tutorial. Click on the image to see a larger version. This nest, which was located just outside the colony ropes, gave the group hours of photographic pleasure. Those who were patient were rewarded with several nest exchanges and feedings. Oftentimes there were 6-8 photographers sitting at the nest simply watching and enjoying. And then clicking away when the chick peeked out or when one of the parents returned. The second egg hatched on the last day of the IPT. Your browser does not support iFrame. |
As far as the birds, we were blessed. What a privilege it to spend three days watching the life and death struggles of the Nickerson’s beach nesting birds. We saw copulating and displaying Black Skimmers. And lots of skimmer blast offs. And displaying American Oystercatchers and family groups, often feeding fledged young. We got to photograph Common Tern chicks that were only hours old. We saw fledged young terns take a fish from one of their parents only to be slammed by three others and lose its valuable meal. And we saw two Common Tern chicks taken by Great Black-backed Gulls and swallowed whole. Be sure to see BAA Bulletin #446 (coming soon) for the complete Nickerson Beach IPT Report. There were hundreds of fledged Common Terns and dozens of chicks along with lots of eggs still in the nests. There were lots of Black Skimmers but they are late getting started nesting this year. And though we endured a few sprinkles on Day 2 and the threat of a thunderstorm that afternoon, the weather treated us most kindly. Our educational sessions were conducted at Bagel Plaza in Merrick where we enjoyed our daily brunches.
From Larry Tawa via e-mail:
I tremendously enjoyed the IPT with you & Denise. I learned much from my IPT experience. It really made a significant difference. I can now understand better your blog, and thus, hope to continue to improve my photography.
From Mark Hardymon via e-mail:
Artie, Just wanted to say thanks for the great few days at Nickerson Beach, had a blast and as always a great group. I’m just now getting my images moved over to my desktop to work on and when I get a chance I’ll send you the skimmer doing the broken wing act. Take care, talk soon – Mark

This Black Skimmer flock blur was of course created at Nickerson Beach on the last IPT with the tripod mounted Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender (with the internal TC in place), the Canon 1.4x EF Extender III (Teleconverter) (at 462mm), and the Canon EOS-1D X. ISO 200. Evaluative metering +1/3 stop: 1/15 sec. at f/13). Central sensor/AI Servo-Expand/Rear Focus AF active at the moment of exposure. Click here if you missed the Rear Focus Tutorial. Click on the image to see a larger version. 1/15 sec. is the classic wildlife blur speed. Learn everything that you wanted to know about creating pleasing blurs in our eGuide of the same name here. Holland 2014 7 1/2-Day/8-Night: A Creative Adventure/BIRDS AS ART/Tulips & A Touch of Holland IPT. April 17-April 24, 2014 :$4995 Limit: 12 photographers/Openings 9
This trip needs 8 registrants to run so please do not purchase your plane tickets until you hear from us; right now we need 5 more folks.
Join Denise Ippolito, Flower Queen and the author of “Bloomin’ Ideas,” and Arthur Morris, Canon Explorer of Light Emeritus and one of the planet’s premier photographic educators for a great trip to Holland in mid-April 2014. Day 1 of the IPT will be April 17, 2014. We will have a short afternoon get-together and then our first photographic session at the justly-famed Keukenhof. Most days we will return to the hotel for lunch, image sharing and a break. On Day 8, April 24, we will enjoy both morning and afternoon photography sessions.
The primary subjects will be tulips and orchids at Keukenhof and the spectacularly amazing tulip, hyacinth, and daffodil bulb fields around Lisse. In addition we will spend one full day in Amsterdam. There will be optional visits the Van Gogh Museum in the morning and the Anne Frank House in the afternoon; there will be plenty of time for street photography as well. And some great food. On another day we will have a wonderful early dinner at Kinderdijk and then head out with our gear to photograph the windmills and possibly some birds for those who bring their longs lenses. We will spend an afternoon in the lovely Dutch town of Edam where we will do some street photography and enjoy a superb dinner. All lodging, ground transportation, entry fees, and meals (from dinner on Day 1 through dinner on Day 8) are included.
For those who will be bringing a big lens we will likely have an optional bird photography afternoon or two. If we get lucky, the big attraction should be gorgeous Purple Herons in flight at a breeding marsh. We would be photographing them from the roadside. And we might be able to find a few Great-crested Grebes at a location near Keukenhof.
