After Bulletin 159 was published, many folks wrote asking about the umbrella clamp set-up that I used so much when it rained so much in San Diego. The combination of the Bogen Super clamp (without stud) and the Avenger Add-a-Head is relatively heavy at 2 1/4 lbs. I had tried many methods of attaching an umbrella to my Wimberley head and had no success at all until a Gitzo rep provided the elegant solution. The Add-a-Head will accept a great variety of umbrella shaft diameters and the rig is designed so that it is possible to place the umbrella (not included) in a variety of positions and at a variety of angles. With a medium or large umbrella it is easy to use a flash under the Umbrella Clamp Rig so long as you do not need to point your lens too far upwards. While it is obvious that one should not use the rig during thunder and lightening storms or in high winds, we ask you to exercise common sense when using the Umbrella Rig. By doing so you will assure that you will not be fried by lightning and that your 500mm IS lens and Mark II will not wind up flying up, up, and away like a kite!
We are offering the Umbrella Clamp Rig (UCR) for $88.00 incl. shipping. Florida residents need to add 7% sales tax to the cost of the rig only ($4.62). Order today to ensure that you get one soon. That way, when it rains, you can smile as you head out to photograph birds knowing all the while that your valuable photographic equipment will be safe and dry.

The popular 3530 LS (three leg sections/4 lbs), which replaces the CF 1325, has been extremely short supply since its release several months ago; we now have them in stock. This is the tripod that I use every day with both my 500 and 600 mm f/4L IS lenses with either the Wimberley head or the Mongoose M3.5. I also use this tripod for macro, and—with the Mongoose 2.3—whenever I need a tripod-mounted intermediate telephoto.
(See
The 3540XLS (four leg sections/4.3 lbs) is for tall folks, 6’ 4” or taller. Todd Gustafson, all 6’ 8” of him, asked me to get him a 3540XLS after hearing good things about it from multiple IPT veteran Bob Wilmschen. I was, however, leery of the rather thin lowest leg sections and suggested that Todd only partially extend the bottom sections. After following my advice, here is what he had to say:
“They finally did it!! They came up with a tripod that I can shoot with in complete comfort. For years I used the heavy Gitzo 410. The height came to just below my chin. It was almost tall enough to shoot flight with but didn't pack down small enough to fit in a regular suitcase. When Gitzo integrated carbon fiber technology into their tripods I switched to the lighter 1548 model thinking I was saving lots of weight. The 1548 folded down to a convenient suitcase size but was still too short. I moved the center column from the 410 tripod to the 1540 so that I could make flight shots in comfort. After shooting a week of jungle birds in Costa Rica I couldn't figure out why my back hurt so much. I realized that the whole tripod set up still wasn't tall enough and that with the center column the 1548 was only one pound lighter than the old 410.
Enter the new line if Gitzo Carbon 6X tripods. My new GT3540XLS model stands an amazing 77" tall! I can stand at full height in comfort and shoot into the jungle canopy or make flight shots with no back pain. The new carbon technology has cut the weight to just over 4 pounds while still providing enough strength to support a 600mm lens, a pro camera body, and a flash setup. The setup and breakdown time on the 1548 model was 45 seconds or more and required 2 hands. With the GT3540XLS I can break down and setup in 10 seconds with one hand due to the new independent leg-locks! Even with the added height it easily fits into a suitcase. And best of all, my images are sharp, even those created at shutter speeds as low as 1/60 second.”
The GT5541LS (four leg sections/6.5 lbs) replaces the CF 1548, but is lighter, stiffer, and stronger. We recommend this model for folks with 400mm f/2.8 or 600 mm lf/4 lenses that do not feature IS or VR technology, and for those who—in their efforts to create the sharpest possible images—demand the most rigid long lens CF tripod available.
TRIPOD MISINFORMATION
Below is a recent e-mail exchange between myself and subscriber Robert Turner. See the moral below.
Hi Robert,
re:
RT: My question is about the Gitzo 3530 LS (no column) CF tripod. All on-line sites state that it replaces the 1325. The problem is the maximum height of the 3530 LS is listed as 50.4 inches versus 58.0 inches for the 1325.
AM: That information is incorrect. One and one half minutes ago, in my garage, I measured the difference in total length of a 1325 and a 3530. The difference was a shade less than 5/8 of one inch. With the legs fully spread, the difference in height was (as expected) even smaller at less than 3/8 of one inch.
RT: Therefore it is not a real replacement.
AM: Is too.
RT: The 3530 is too short for 5-11 persons and the next size is the 77 " 4-section model.
AM: Says who??? I am 5' 11 inches. (Used to be 6 foot.) I use the 3530 with the bottom leg sections in about 4inches for most photography (though I do extend them a bit more for some flight situations).
RT: There is a huge gap between the two models. Any suggestions for another quality model 58" height?
AM: Yes, the 3530 LS. I went back to the garage with my able-bodied assistant Jim Litzenberg for a second style of measurement: The height of the 1325 open is indeed 58 inches. The height of the 3530 fully open is 57 3/4 inches. It is best not to believe everything that you read on the internet. We have several 3530 LS tripods in stock and look forward to filling your order.
Later and love, artie
Moral: The big camera stores (and all of the little ones too) may have huge stock and experienced salespersons. And they carry Canon and Nikon cameras which we do not. They are not, however, nature photographers. I have been doing this coming up on 25 years now and I do not BS folks. We know what we are talking about and sell only the stuff that I use and the stuff that works. If we do not carry the exact Gitzo CF tripod that would like to purchase, please get in touch with us and we will have it drop-shipped (after telling you whether or not you are purchasing the correct tripod for your gear. And, as always, we sell everything for a nickel less than B&H except when we are not permitted to do so.
The leveling base fits Systematic tripods and offers high performance and 15° tilt around a large half ball. The ultra wide platform gives solid support. Ideal for leveling flat base fluid heads, it also can be used as heavy duty, low profile head substitute for medium or large format cameras.

The Canon Off-Shoe Remote Cord 2 is the weak link in an otherwise great flash system. Over the years, I have probably purchased two dozen of them. The biggest problem is that when your flash is mounted on a flash bracket, the constant vibrations cause the screws that hold the distal hot shoe (the one that screws into your flash bracket) in place loosen over time, sometimes to the point that the flash no longer makes contact with the hot shoe (at which time your flash is rendered inoperable). There is a rather complicated fix that involves prying off the u-shaped cover with a tiny flat blade screwdriver and then tightening the tiny screws with a cross-type or Phillips head screwdriver. (It is best to tighten the screws after applying some non-permanent Loc-Tite.) Even with the hot shoe securely tightened in place this unit experiences other problems. With frequent use, the Remote Cord 2’s wiring fails quite often causing the LCD on the flash to go haywire. I always traveled with a spare Remote Cord 2. If your flash goes whacky, first try fresh batteries in your flash head, then remove your Remote Cord 2 and try your back-up. If you are using any other external battery pack, it is necessary to travel with a backup cord as well. Lastly, if your flash rig hit against some branches as you were walking through the woods, the hot shoe mentioned above often simply broke in half.
Once again Robert O’Toole’s vast technical knowledge saved the day. He suggested using the remote cord that he uses, the PROMASTER “Flash Extension Cord/Off Camera TTL unit. He stated that he had been using one for two years without a single problem. It took me a few weeks to get my hands on one, and several months more to order 100 units. I have been using mine for more than three months and am impressed with the sturdy construction and the performance. Full automatic flash exposure control is maintained with all modern Canon flashes.
BIRDS AS ART is proud to announce the latest product in our mail order line, the PROMASTER “Flash Extension Cord/Off Camera TTL” unit is now available for $64.00 incl. shipping and handling. Overseas customers please e-mail for additional shipping charges.
Florida residents please add 7% sales tax to the cost of the cord only. For Florida folks, the cost is $68.20 incl. shipping. If you are tired of buying Remote Cord 2 after Remote Cord 2, you will find this new product an amazing improvement.NOTE: Please specify Canon or Nikon when ordering
NOTE: We also have the same cord for
Nikon systems. If you are using this with a Wimberley flash bracket, you will also need this: (Nikon Only)This adapter allows you to attach the Nikon SC-29 Cord or the PROMASTER cord to Wimberley flash brackets.

At only 1.3 pounds and small enough to be
easily packed, the Sidekick converts your ball head into a gimbal head in
seconds. Simply slide the Sidekick into the quick release of your ball head. The
Sidekick's elevated tilt mechanism and side mounted quick release allow the lens
to rotate around its center of gravity. This provides the same action and ease
of use found in the Wimberley Head at greatly reduced size, weight, and cost.
Remove the Sidekick and your ball head is ready to use with smaller lenses. The
Sidekick is designed for lenses similar in size to a 300mm F2.8 (including most
500mm lenses).

Wimberley lens plates come with safety stops at the front and back of the plate.
No more worrying about your expensive lens accidentally slipping out of the
quick release clamp. This feature is unique to Wimberley Plates. I recommend
that you opt to use both stops. If you do so, you must open the jaws of the
quick release clamp wide enough to load your lens from the top (instead of
sliding it in). Use of the two stops will ensure that your big expensive lens
will never fall out of the clamp should you (as we all do every now and then)
forget to tighten the clamp when balancing your rig fore and aft.
Wimberley Lens Plates
The suggested plates allow enough length to easily balance your lens in almost
every configuration. The plates are generally at least 3/4" longer than the
mounting foot of the suggested lens. This allows you to attach a flash bracket
to the top surface of the plate.
For Canon EF Lenses:
The P-5 plate is the Universal Camera Body plate
The P-20 plate is perfect for the 180mm Macro, the 70-200mm f/2.8, the
80-200 f/2.8, the 35-350 zoom, all of the 300mm f/4.0s, the 100-400mm IS zoom,
and the my beloved "toy lens" the 400mm f/5.6.
The P-30 plate fits the Nikon 400 3.5 MF, Nikon 500 4.0 MF, 600 5.6 MF
and Canon 300 2.8 IS.
The P-40 plate is perfect for the 500mm f4/5. The P-40 plate plus one
reducer bushing is perfect for the amazingly popular 500mm f/4.0 IS lens.
A reducer bushing is needed for some of the Canon IS super-telephotos
because one of the mounting holes is larger than the other (to accommodate
sports photographers using monopods).
The P-50 plate is perfect for the 400mm f/2.8 II and the 600mm f/4.0.
The P-50 plate plus one reducer bushing* is perfect for the 400mm
f/2.8 IS, the 600mm f/4 IS lens and the old EF 800mm f/5.6L.
The P-40 plate is correct for the 400mm f/2.8 AF-S and for all Nikor
500mm AF lenses.
The P-50 plate is correct for 400mm f/2.8 AF-I, all of the 600mm lenses,
and the old manual focus 800mm f/5.6.
Prices:
The P-5 plate is $57 incl. shipping and handling
The P-20 plates are $57 incl. shipping and handling.
The P-30 plate is $60 incl. shipping and handling.
The P-40 and P-50 plates are $63 incl. shipping and handling. Please

F-9 Wimberley Head Flash Bracket (for Wimberley Head Version II) This bracket consists of modules M3 & M9. It attaches directly to the
Arca-Swiss style dovetail on the swinging arm of the Wimberley Head Version
II. Since it is attached to the head and not your lens, it remains in place
when you switch lenses. The bracket folds flat for easy storage. The F-9 bracket has been designed to
clamp to both the swing arm of the V-2 Wimberley and to the plates so it can
be used when working on the ground or from the car, but I still prefer
the F-1 to the F-9 in these situations as it gives you more flexibility.

F-4Wimberley Head Flash Bracket(For Wimberley Head Version I) The Wimberley Head Flash Bracket attaches in an instant to the arm of the Wimberley Head with a low-profile quick release clamp. No more dropping and turning little screws for five minutes... Since it attaches to the head instead of the lens, it is smaller than other brackets. Furthermore, it stays on the head when you switch lenses (no need for multiple brackets, or to move a bracket from lens to lens). The bracket disassembles and folds for easy storage. The F-4 bracket fits only the (older) Wimberley Tripod Head Version I. Wimberley Head Flash Bracket: $192.00 incl. shipping and handling. Wimberley Sidekick
Flash Bracket
The Wimberley F-1 Telephoto Flash BracketThis bracket attaches almost instantly to the quick release plate of your telephoto lens and wraps 180 degrees around the lens to position the flash above the lens. No more dropping and turning little screws for five minutes... Adjust the vertical position of the Tilt Arm on the Upright for different sized telephoto lenses. Flip the Tilt Arm upside down to lower the flash even further. You can also attach the Tilt Arm so that it positions the flash off-center. The F-1 can be used on any telephoto lens with either a long enough plate or any Wimberley Plate such as the P-40 or P-50. All Wimberley heads have top of the plate mounting capabilities, that is, you can turn the clamp module upside down and attach the F-1 to the top of the plate. The huge advantage of the F-1 over the F-4 bracket is that it can be used when you are working on the ground or from the car. The newer F-9 bracket has been designed to clamp to both the swing arm of the V-2 Wimberley and to the plates as well, but that said, I prefer the F-1 to the F-9 when working on the ground or from the car as it gives you more flexibility. The Wimberley F-1 Flash Bracket: is $202.00 which includes shipping and handling to US addresses. All Flash Brackets are shipped by US Priority Mail delivery confirm. The ground-pod consists of a 4X8" base plate
(with 4 little rubber-nubbed "feet" at each corner) and a small but sturdy
Arca-Swiss style clamp mounted atop lazy-Susan type base that makes it is easier
to follow running or foraging birds. (The base itself has four cut-out sections
that reduce the weight of the unit.) The thing that I love most about the
ground-pod is that when I turn the lens to vertical, the height of the pod keeps
the camera out of the sand or mud. (This is a big problem when you simply
place the mounting plate and the lens foot in the sand or mud. as I did for
years) And of course, the ground-pod keeps most of the sand and mud off of
your expensive equipment... If
you would like one, please send a check for $211 to PO Box 7245, Indian Lake Estates, FL 33855.

A while back, Chas
Glatzer handed me a triangular pad designed to ease the pain and strain of
carrying a large lens on your shoulder. It laid in the back of my car for a few
months until I finally got curious. I attached the Tripod Pad to my Gitzo Carbon
Fiber 1325 via the Velcro straps. It took me a while to position the pad
perfectly, and it took a bit of getting used to, but now I am totally
comfortable with the pad. When you are wearing a great vest with good shoulder
pads--like my X-tra Hand Magnum vest-- (http://www.birdsasart.com/bn61.htm
or
http://www.vestedinterest.com/about.htm)--the Tripod Pad is a nice plus
adding extra padding to protect your shoulder. I came up with a way to position
the tripod on my shoulder so that the Tripod Pad rests on my shoulder while the
legs of the tripod do not. The Tripod Pad acts sort of like a cradle.
There
are many times, however, that I love to set my vest down on a beach or a
boardwalk and take a stroll with just my big lens and a teleconverter or two.
Before the Tripod Pad, such short journeys were agonizingly painful as the legs
of the tripod would dig into my shoulder with each step. With the Tripod Pad,
things are different now: I plop the tripod on my shoulder and hardly notice the
rig at all as I search for subjects.
You
can order your Shoulder Saver Tripod Pad now for $42.95 incl. shipping and
handling.
HEALTH
TIP: It is best to alternate shoulders every few hundred yards or so when you
are expecting action. If you face a long walk to get in position it is even
better to un-mount your big lens, carry it (by holding the lens foot) in one
hand, and carry your tripod in the other hand.
Notes: I position my
Tripod Pad lower on the tripod than is shown in the images above.
In addition, when on
the move, I always carry my tripod much higher on my shoulder and more parallel
to the ground than is shown in the image above right.
Though
I rarely rely on throw-over blinds, I do recognize a great product when I see
one. Living in
Florida, many of the
birds are--on average--quite tame. In other areas of the country however, being
able to cover up quickly and effectively is a huge plus. Kwik Camo blinds can be
used at backyard set-ups, water drips, or in the forest. They are great for
reducing stress on the birds when working nests in the woods, at the beach or on
the tundra. Lastly, they can be used effectively to hide the human form when you
are attempting to work skittish birds from your vehicle. All three blinds are
lightweight and portable, and are large enough for most NBA players.
There are currently two models
available, the Kwik Camo Original, for most applications in cool to moderate
temperatures. And the Kwik Camo Summer, made of a light weight mesh material for
use in warmer weather. This model allows for maximum air flow keeping you both
cool and camouflaged. This model works great as a cover too! The summer blind is
$107.95 and the Original is $127.95 incl. shipping and handling. Be sure to
specify the model (shown below). For Canada or overseas, please call
for pricing.
The Original Kwik Camo Throw-over Blind is on the top, the Kwik Camo Summer
Throw-over Blind in its carrying case is on the bottom.
