PHOTO HOTSPOT ALERT: FORT DESOTO
PARK
Recently, I have begun spending time at Fort DeSoto Park on
Mullet Key south of St. Petersburg, Florida. My favorite spot
in the park, which features a variety of habitats, is the lagoon
at North Beach. This past Wednesday and Thursday, I had a ball
photographing breeding plumaged Laughing Gulls performing a
variety of breeding-related behaviors. These gulls are
spectacularly beautiful at this time of year with their
blood-red bills, velvety black hoods, white eye crescents, red
eye-rings, wine-red legs, snow-white breasts, and dark gray
mantles. I finished a roll of a pair copulating in ten seconds
! I was also lucky enough to capture images of various
mating displays and even made two frames of a male vomiting up
fish into his mate's mouth, surely a sign of true love!. I will
share some of these images with you in a future Bulletin. In
addition, I photographed Royal and Sandwich Terns, both species
in full breeding plumage, several shorebird species including
Red Knot, Marbled Godwit, and Long-billed Curlew. The lagoon can
be great in both morning and afternoon. If you are lucky, you
may find the area near the Bay Pier alive with migrants on a
spring morning, especially after a cold front has passed
through. If you have a chance, get out to DeSoto with your long
lens and let me know how you do.
