What is the best ballhead for a 500mm or 600mm lens?

There is no good ballhead for 500 and 600mm lenses.  If you own a large telephoto lens, you should be using a Wimberley Head.  These remarkable gimbal-type heads render big lenses virtually  weightless.  Lens handling and flight shooting are effortless.  Do note that BIRDS AS ART is a Wimberely dealer.

When I need a ballhead for an intermediate telephoto lens or for macro or scenic work, I use a Linhoff Prophy ballhead.  While these ballheads are expensive, they are the very best out there.  They provide rock-solid support, the tension on the ball is smooth and easily set, and there are no problems with the ball freezing or becoming locked up.  You will need to purchase an Arca-Swiss style clamp for the Prophy-series ballheads.  We recommend one of the two Wimberely Quick Release Clamps, the smaller C-10, or the longer C-30.
