Immature Snow Goose, Bosque Del Apache NWR, NM. Canon 600mm f/L
IS lens, 2X II TC, 1.4X II TC, Canon EOS 1v camera body. Manual
Focus. Provia F 100 pushed two stops (rated at EI 320).
Evaluative metering at zero; 1/125 second at f/11.
With
the new Canon Series II teleconverters, you can stack the 1.4X II
TC behind the 2X II TC without using an extension tube. Most
sunny afternoons at Bosque found dozens of geese within 40 feet of
the road right near the refuge entrance. I took advantage of this
opportunity to make head shots of both adult and young Snow
Geese. (There were so many birds that isolating one for a
portrait was difficult.)
I
stopped down for additional sharpness. Using stacked
teleconverters almost always requires you to focus manually, and
always requires perfect sharpness techniques. That said, I
usually make one really sharp image out of every half dozen or
so. I think that the high failure rate is, however, due to the
difficulty of focusing. because I usually get several sharp ones
in a row...
